If you have just bought or adopted a puppy, I believe the first thing you would want to do is to potty train it. However, there are situations where the dog owners face problems with their housetrained puppies or even dogs urinating at inappropriate moments or places. Some even defecate! When potty training puppy, is there anything you can do to prevent such unwanted urination from happening?

What would you do if your puppy cannot control its urine or feces? 1. Make sure it is not a medical problem

The first thing you should do is to check whether it is a medical problem that your puppy is facing. If you have already tried potty training your puppy but it is still eliminating its urine at inappropriate moments and venues, then your puppy might be suffering from bladder infections which could cause the unwanted urination problem. Your puppy will not be able to control its urine from being eliminated so you should take it for a check with the vet first. If medical problem is the reason behind, then medication might be able to help it control the unwanted urination.

2. Find out the cause of the urination

If you have already seek help from the vet and examinations have concluded that there is nothing medically wrong with your puppy, you should now try to observe the cause for its problems. When puppies are overly excited, they can lose control of their bladders. If that is the case, the problem can be solved as the puppy grows older. It will then be able to control its bladder better.

Nevertheless, you need to remember that such easily excitable puppies are not aware that they are causing a problem for you. Thus, it is useless to reprimand them as it will only make them more confused. 3. Work on the solution for the cause of urination

As mentioned above, if medical issue is the reason for your puppy’s unwanted urination problem, then medication can easily solve it. As for excitement urination problem, you can overcome it by controlling the amount of excitement your puppy faces. As long as you do not let it get overly excited, you will be able to reduce the frequency of the problem. Over time, you will be successful at your potty training puppy exercise when your puppy is in total control of its waste elimination.

In order not to let your puppy get overly excited, you can expose it to such situations more frequently to the extend that it no longer feel excited when it faces the same situation. Once it is not excited, it will be able to control its urine and remember its potty training exercises.

If on the other hand, you discovered that your puppy faces a different problem from the ones described above, it is likely that it is suffering from submissive urination. That is a sign that your puppy is feeling insecure and could have been abused before. In this case, you will need to build up a better relationship with your puppy so as to develop its self esteem. That will solve its unwanted urination problem.
